About:
The house, which was built as a sanctuary for shipwrecked sailors, is itself the sole survivor of 10 such structures built along the East Coast in 1875. Visitors will learn of ships like the brigantine J.H. Jane that was bound from Cuba to Philadelphia in 1886 when it wrecked during a storm on a reef about 5 miles from Gilbert's Bar Station. The house's keeper and two assistants learned of the wreck and saved seven lives... The house's name comes from the pirate Don Pedro Gilbert and then Navy used it during World War II as a submarine spotter station. Just tell the kids they'll get tales of centuries-old shipwrecks and an 18th century pirate who once menaced Florida's East Coast.
